A woman shares her unsettling experience at a BBQ party where she and other guests were not provided enough food and were left to eat leftovers. Etiquette experts weigh in on the host's responsibility and the importance of ensuring all guests are adequately fed.
Many people love attending BBQ parties. It's a chance to socialize and enjoy delicious food. However, one woman's recent experience at a BBQ turned into something she'd rather forget. She found herself at a party with eleven other people, eight of whom were invited guests. The problem? There wasn't enough food for everyone. After the eight invited guests finished their meals, the remaining three were invited to eat the leftovers. Naturally, the woman found this incredibly awkward and strange.
She explained in a recent interview that she suspects they were invited by a friend who was an actual guest, rather than the host. She felt unwelcome from the start. Adding to the awkwardness, the woman's ex-boyfriend was the only one among the uninvited guests who ate the leftovers. The rest stood around feeling uncomfortable as the invited guests enjoyed their meal together. The woman admitted that they should have never gone to the host's house during dinner, and that the friend who invited them shouldn't have, in the first place. She emphasized that no matter the circumstances, she would never make guests stand around and watch her eat. She believes that everyone involved – the host, the friend who invited them, the uninvited guests, and even her ex-boyfriend – made a mistake. She concluded that if she had known they were crashing a dinner party, she would have never gone.Diane Gottsman, a national etiquette expert and owner of The Protocol School of Texas, echoed the woman's sentiments. She stressed that the host should have tried to find a solution to feed everyone, but leaving guests standing around waiting for leftovers was simply rude. She pointed out that a host's top priority is making their guests feel comfortable, and ensuring there's enough food is crucial. Gottsman emphasized that having ample food and beverages is essential because it's impossible to predict how much someone will eat or drink. She suggested the host could have served smaller portions or ordered takeout to provide extra food. Gottsman also addressed the expectation of guests bringing something to a dinner. She explained that, according to etiquette rules, guests should bring something when the host specifically asks them to.
