Bahamians rescue victims of Hurricane Dorian with jet skis and a bulldozer as the US Coast Guard, Britain's Royal Navy and aid groups try to get food and medicine to survivors

A family is escorted to a safe zone after they were rescued as Hurricane Dorian continues to rain in Freeport, Bahamas, September 3, 2019.

In the Bahamas, Red Cross spokesman Matthew Cochrane said more than 13,000 houses, or about 45% of the homes on Grand Bahama and Abaco, were believed to be severely damaged or destroyed. UN officials said more than 60,000 people on the hard-hit islands will need food, and the Red Cross said some 62,000 will need clean drinking water.

The runways at Grand Bahama International Airport in Freeport, the island's largest city, were under water, complicating rescue and recovery efforts. Five Coast Guard helicopters ran near-hourly flights to the stricken Abaco, flying more than 20 injured people to the capital's main hospital. The Pentagon said 5,000 members of the National Guard and 2,700 active-duty troops were ready to help out if needed. The Red Cross authorised $500,000 for the first wave of disaster relief, Red Cross spokesman Cochrane said. UN humanitarian teams stood ready to go into the stricken areas to help assess damage and the country's needs, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.It said Dorian was expected to turn toward the north on Wednesday evening.
