The man allegedly fled from police during the arrest and was chased into an area filled with blackberry bushes.
The B.C. entity in charge of investigating police conduct will look into a death that came following an attempted arrest on the Sunshine Coast.
Around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sunshine Coast RCMP were called to a bank in the 5500-block of Sunshine Coast Highway in Sechelt for a man who was attempting to make a fraudulent transaction. Officers at the scene arrested the man and were walking him to a police cruiser when the man allegedly ran from police. A foot chase led into a nearby area filled with blackberry bushes and police were able to re-capture the man.
“While officers were attempting to get the man out of the brush, he complained of breathing problems,” read a police news release. The man then collapsed and did not respond to police. Officers then began life-saving measures while waiting for paramedics but the man did not survive. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is now looking into the death to determine whether police action or inaction were linked to the man’s death.
