A man was injured after being caught in an avalanche near Mount Cain on Vancouver Island. Witness bystanders and a coordinated response from several search and rescue organizations, including Campbell River SAR and North Shore Rescue, successfully located and extracted the man. He was treated at a lodge and later flown by helicopter to Vancouver General Hospital for further medical care.

A range of search and rescue organizations are being credited with saving a man who was caught and injured in an avalanche on Vancouver Island over the weekend.

“They were needed in case avalanche conditions were not suitable for a ground extraction, and they would be able to come in above the avalanche conditions,” said the search manager.Mount Cain Alpine ParkHe says the volunteer group arrived on snowmobiles and that the team included a Canadian Avalanche Association level 2 technician, who could assess the site and avalanche risks.

North Shore Rescue says Sunday’s operation was the first time that one of its teams picked up a patient and flew them directly to the helicopter landing pad at VGH.
