A 35-year-old skier suffered serious injuries after a fall at Mount Cain on Vancouver Island. Search and rescue teams, including Comox Valley Search and Rescue, responded to the incident and successfully extracted the injured skier via helicopter.
A 35-year-old skier was found seriously injured on a steep Vancouver Island skiing slope. Search and rescue crews arrived via helicopter and worked with other emergency responders to ensure a safe extraction. CVSAR responded to Mount Cain, northwest of Campbell River, on Saturday after the skier “suffered a serious fall and was found unconscious,” the group said in a social media post this weekend.
The critical Class D Fixed Line (CDFL) rescue was in the mountain’s west bowl, outside the ski boundaries, where “the dedicated patrol team at Mt. Cain took immediate action, initiating rescue efforts and preparing for air assistance.” Boss says no one saw the fall happen, and the skier was found “with a decreased level of consciousness,” prompting an initial response from Mt. Cain staff. SAR crews were dealt with a “time crunch,” and 49 North Helicopters flew to the Courtenay Airpark to pick them up before flying them to Mt. Cain. The staff and a doctor already on scene had partially stabilized the skier using a vacuum spine board by the time Comox Valley-based SAR arrived. According to the Regional District of Mount Waddington, “At Mount Cain, you’ll find deep powder, 21 runs, with 1499 vertical feet of terrain.” It’s usually open on weekends and holidays between early December and April, with the backcountry offering a “multitude of bowls and gladed areas…” CVSAR says the mountain had “expertly prepared” landing zones for rescue helicopters — one for the 49N, and another for an Ascent Air ambulance. “Our team completed the packaging and transported the injured skier using an Aerial Rescue Platform in a CDFL operation to the Mt. Cain parking area, where BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) took over care,” reads the post. Once the skier was with paramedics, the helicopter returned to the slope to pick up Boss and the rest of the team before transporting them back to the airpark in Courtenay. “This mission demonstrated the incredible collaboration between Mt. Cain patrol, BCEHS, 49 North Helicopters, and Ascent Helicopters,” added CVSAR. “A huge thank you to everyone involved for your skill, speed, and teamwork that made this challenging rescue possible,” reads the Facebook post from Sunday
