A 22-point loss means the Buckeyes likely face an uphill climb to a bid
There are a few slim scenarios remaining for the Buckeyes to earn a bid, but Saturday’s 22-point margin of defeat and the lost opportunity to play in next weekend’s Big Ten championship are working against them.
TCU and USC can still chalk their way into the dance, but if they don’t, I am not really sure Ohio State should sneak its way in a la 2016 after Saturday’s performance. The Buckeyes were outscored 28–3 by Michigan in the second half and were repeatedly gashed for big plays by the Wolverines’ offense.
The circumstances in 2016 were substantially different for Ohio State. It lost a close matchup against eventual division champion Penn State by three points in October and had multiple opportunities to continue to impress the committee. Michigan was able to beat Ohio State in Columbus for the first time since 2000 and won back-to-back games against its rival for the first time in 22 years—even without injured star running back Blake Corum. With the win, the Wolverines advance to next weekend’s Big Ten title game and will look to lock in their second straight Playoff appearance.
