Bethel-Thompson is not impressed with how league promotes itself or protects its players
REGINA—Argos quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson implored the Canadian Football League to do a better job of promotion and player protection during Grey Cup media day.
Bethel-Thompson believes the CFL can do a better marketing job, and that starts with commissioner Randy Ambrosie. Ambrosie told a House of Commons finance committee in May 2020 that the league’s nine teams lost between $10 million and $20 million each during the pandemic. The league shut down in 2020 over COVID concerns, and while teams like the Argos had contingency plans to help players financially, the CFL’s request for a $30-million, interest-free loan was rejected by the federal government, leaving players without pay.
The Argos quarterback wasn’t happy with the league’s response earlier this season to an incident involving friend Jeremiah Masoli, an Ottawa Redblacks quarterback. Masoli suffered a season-ending injury in July on a low hit by Saskatchewan defensive end Garrett Marino, who also uttered a racial slur and thumped his chest while mocking Masoli.
