As the provincial government approaches the halfway point in its mandate, it’s a natural time to take stock and assess its biggest commitment: To make housing in B.C. more affordable.
Why? Because our economy is strong, employment levels lead the nation, and B.C. continues to be a wonderful place to live and work. As a result, up to 40,000 newcomers will move to Metro Vancouver this year, plus another 140,000 foreign students and temporary workers. It’s bewildering and troubling — the number of new homes simply isn’t keeping pace with the number of would-be renters and buyers. Prices are high and rental accommodation is almost impossible to find.
First, we need more homes of all types. Metro Vancouver is much more than apartment towers and single-family homes. Many communities are ready to embrace other home options such as townhomes, row homes, micro-suites, triplexes, mid-rise buildings and more. Rather than saying “no” to change, we need to see how our neighbourhoods can adapt for today’s needs.
Fourth, our governments must ensure fair taxation on new homes. Adding another “development fee” merely increases costs for the eventual renter or homeowner.
