Animal Justice released video evidence alleging animal cruelty at Johnston's Packers processing plant in Chilliwack, prompting investigations by both the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the BC SPCA.
Animal Justice released a video in December 2024 alleging abuse of pigs at Johnston's Packers processing plant in Chilliwack, British Columbia. The video, captured by an anonymous whistleblower, purported to show pigs being cut open while still conscious and experiencing agony. Animal Justice claimed the footage revealed blatant violations of animal protection laws and appalling conditions within the facility.
\Following the video's release, the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the BC SPCA launched investigations to verify the allegations. A ministry veterinarian conducted an in-depth review of practices at the Chilliwack plant, which processes 500 pigs daily. The ministry stated that Johnston's Packers is required to implement corrective actions, including adjustments to production practices, occupational health and safety, and worker training. \The Ministry of Agriculture and Food emphasized its commitment to ensuring the humane treatment of animals at all slaughter facilities. They indicated that inspectors will now focus on both food safety and animal welfare. The BC SPCA, mandated by law to investigate animal welfare concerns, continues its ongoing investigation. Animal Justice expressed concern that the violations were allowed to occur despite the presence of ministry inspectors. They called for stronger oversight and accountability in slaughterhouses to prevent future cruelty. Meanwhile, Johnston's Packers has not yet responded to requests for comment

Chilliwack Council Calls for Equitable Distribution of Shelter BedsChilliwack council is urging the provincial government to create shelter beds more equitably across communities. The call comes after hospitals in the Fraser Health and Coastal Health regions discharged individuals with complex care needs to Chilliwack shelters, despite being told there were no beds available. Chilliwack currently has the highest number of shelter beds per capita in the Lower Mainland, but council argues that this results in people migrating to areas with greater bed availability, leaving their home communities.
