Dan Oostenbrink, a dedicated gardener from Chilliwack's Local Harvest Market, is hosting a free online workshop on January 20th to teach individuals how to plan and cultivate a year-round harvest.
Dan Oostenbrink of the Local Harvest Market in Chilliwack is on a mission to empower individuals to grow more food. Oostenbrink will share his expertise in a free online workshop on January 20th titled 'Planning Your Garden for a Year-Round Harvest'. With over 1,200 people already registered for the 1.5-hour session, Oostenbrink expressed his surprise and delight at the overwhelming response.
He has been sharing his gardening and permaculture principles with small groups of 20 people, but this online workshop will allow him to reach hundreds, if not thousands, at once.Oostenbrink's journey to create this workshop began with encouragement from a friend who urged him to develop an online gardening course. They envisioned its potential to significantly impact food security not only in Chilliwack but across Canada and the globe. Oostenbrink, inspired by the success of The Local Harvest Market, where he and his team have cultivated abundant food using sustainable practices, felt compelled to share their knowledge. He emphasized the diminishing quality of food in supermarkets coupled with rising prices, highlighting the urgency for individuals to take control of their food source.'Our purpose in life extends beyond ourselves,' he shared, quoting his friend who stressed the importance of sharing organic gardening and farming knowledge. Oostenbrink believes that food security is a collective responsibility. He wants to empower individuals to grow more food for themselves and their families, turning vacant yards and acreages into thriving food gardens. The workshop will cover essential topics such as successive planting, maximizing shoulder seasons, creating cost-effective microclimates, employing ancient storage methods, and understanding the influence of day length and temperature on vegetable growth. Oostenbrink envisions a future where his expertise reaches a wider audience through a dedicated course and educational platform. He is dedicated to helping home gardeners, homesteaders, and market gardeners achieve greater food self-sufficiency, fostering a sense of joy and confidence in their gardening endeavors. Ultimately, he aims to contribute to building food-secure communities, one garden at a time
