Andrew Friedman and Dave Roberts will return to their same positions next season with the Los Angeles Dodgers
WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 06: Dave Roberts #30 of the Los Angeles Dodgers laughs during batting practice prior to game three of the National League Division Series against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on October 06, 2019 in Washington,Andrew Friedman and Dave Roberts will be back in their respective positions next season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Friedman as president of baseball operations and Roberts for his fifth season as manager.
Friedman, who’s near the end of his original five-year contract, said he’s not going anywhere, dashing rumors he might move to the Boston Red Sox to fill a similar position left empty last month with the firing of Dave Dombrowski. Friedman’s $35 million deal is expiring Oct. 31. They lost the World Series the last two years and now an NLDS on their home turf, dropping a Game 7 to the Houston Astros in 2017, and a Game 5 to the Boston Red Sox last year. Add this past Wednesday night’s debacle when Clayton Kershaw couldn’t hold a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning, giving up tying homers on consecutive pitches to Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto.
Friedman moving to the Red Sox was purely speculation, much like Mike Hazen departing the Arizona Diamondbacks to return to his old club in the head position. Both took themselves out of the running by re-upping with their current clubs. Roberts, in his first full-time job as a Major League manager, is 393-256 during his four seasons managing the Dodgers, a .606 winning percentage.
Kelly pitched a flawless ninth, but immediately loaded the bases for Kendrick to start the 10th with closer Kenley Jansen warmed up and ready in the bullpen.
