It's been 100 years since the discovery of King Tut's tomb. More than 5,000 artifacts – including furniture, jewelry, toys, food and his iconic mask – have be removed from the densely packed tomb and catalogued.
In perhaps the most famous and enduring archaeological discovery in modern times, the unearthing of the tomb of King Tutankhamun, an otherwise obscure Egyptian pharaoh, in November 1922 captured the world's imagination through widespread press accounts. Over the 10 years after the opening of the tomb, more than 5,000 artifacts – including furniture, jewelry, toys, food and his iconic mask – would be removed from the densely packed tomb and catalogued.
The Valley of the Kings is home to 63 underground royal mausoleums in a tight area roughly one-third of the size of New York's Central Park. So many tombs are carved into the craggy limestone terrain that several tombs' corridors crisscross each other. Tutankhamun's tomb, KV62, runs through bedrock directly beneath the corridor of KV9, tomb of pharaohs Rameses V and Rameses VI.By the standards of other royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, Tutankhamun's tomb is small.
