SaltWire weather specialist Allister Aalders recaps the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, which came to an end on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Fiona developed on Sept. 15 and, after devastating parts of the Caribbean, set its sights on Atlantic Canada.

Fiona made landfall as a powerful post-tropical storm near Canso, N.S., in the early hours of Sept. 24 but had winds equivalent to a category two hurricane and was the lowest barometric pressure storm recorded on land anywhere in Canada.Trees toppled like dominoes while large and powerful waves eroded coastlines and washed homes out to sea. Some residents went weeks without power. To this day, the full scope and cost of the damage are being assessed with ongoing cleanup efforts.

A power line was pulled down by a tree that was uprooted by Fiona's hurricane-force winds. The tree fell into this home on Union Street in Sydney and ripped up the roof, causing major damage to the rental unit. NICOLE SULLIVAN / CAPE BRETON POST - NICOLE SULLIVAN/CAPE BRETON POSTGiven the devastation they caused, the names Fiona and Ian will likely be retired next spring.

An unfortunate reminder that whether the season is busy or not, it only takes one storm to make it a bad one.
