Another system is on the way – a Colorado low that will merge with an Alberta clipper as it approaches the Great Lakes region.
A frontal boundary extending into the Gulf of Mexico will be responsible for heavy rain and powerful winds to welcome the new month. It has been one low after another over the past few weeks. The system's centre will then track through northern Ontario and Quebec toward the Hudson Strait, but a strong cold front extending from the low to the Gulf of Mexico will cross our region Wednesday night and Thursday.
As a result, rain, at times heavy, will develop from west to east across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Wednesday night into Thursday. Rain will slowly develop across Newfoundland on Thursday – likely reaching the Avalon Peninsula late Thursday night. A rain/snow mix is forecast for Labrador. The latest guidance indicates 10 to 30 mm of rain will fall across the region. Localized amounts of 30 to 50 mm are possible due to heavy downpours.
Powerful southerly winds will also develop ahead of and along the front, with peak gusts set to range 60 to 80 km/h, with the likelihood gusts of 80 to 100-plus km/h over eastern Nova Scotia, much of Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland.Onshore flurries will return in the wake of the system for parts of the eastern Maritimes and Newfoundland, but a high-pressure ridge will also arrive in the region.
The position and timing of the high are somewhat uncertain heading into next weekend, but it won’t be sticking around very long as another low-pressure system will nudge its way in later Saturday into Sunday.
