The Alberta RCMP are asking residents and businesses to register their video surveillance cameras with them to help reduce time in investigations.
The Community Assisted Policing Through the Use of Recorded Evidence, or CAPTURE, is a voluntary registry program the RCMP has expanded across the province where private residents and business owners can sign up and let police know they have a camera on their property, police said in a Monday news release.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
Police said any information they obtain is kept private and only RCMP officers can see the registered properties on the list that have signed up. “This initiative won’t replace officers from knocking on doors, but it will help officers track down video evidence in ongoing criminal investigations in RCMP jurisdictions,” police said in the news release.Article content
If there is a crime in the area, and you have registered your cameras to CAPTURE, the RCMP can ask to see if you have any footage available that might help their case. You would then have the choice to upload your footage to their website where they will review it. The program does not give RCMP live access to any video feed, police said, and no equipment leaves the property. If officers find any footage that could potentially help with their investigation, officers will provide property owners with a USB drive to download the video onto.“This strategy is another way the Alberta RCMP are working with our communities to help solve crime faster, together,” police said in the news release.
