Manitoba bus crash: RCMP to provide update today, as public waits for word on identities of victims

The biting smell of scorched earth lingered Friday morning at the site of athat left 15 dead in southwestern Manitoba. Not quite 24 hours after a bus carrying mostly seniors, en route to a casino in nearby Carberry, Manitoba, collided with a semi truck, major clean up had been completed and a pot of purple petunias and white pansies marked a makeshift memorial.

Dauphin Mayor David Bosiak says everyone in the city of about 8,600 knows someone who was on the bus, and that there was a collective feeling of shock Thursday. The highway “did appear clear” at the time of the crash, and the question of who had the right of way is a “critical point” of a complex investigation that has just begun, he said.

Kim Armstrong, the administrator of the Dauphin Active Living Centre, said the bus departed from the lodge early Thursday. She said the senior community is extremely tight-knit. Officials said 12 ambulances responded along with air support to the crash. Carberry is 170 kilometres west of Winnipeg and about halfway between Winnipeg and the Saskatchewan boundary.
