McCann, however, said there needs to be long-term planning to seize the opportunities.While some commodities, such as wheat, are reaching record prices, so are the costs of inputs such as fuel and fertilizer — and producers are still months away from harvest and knowing what they will be able to take to market.

On Friday, the federal, provincial and territorial ministers of agriculture reached an agreement in principle for the sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a new five-year, $500-million agreement. It includes enhancements to business risk management programs such as AgriStability.Article content
