There are many contributing factors, including climate change, severe weather, infrastructure issues and political policy roadblocks.
“I think people understand that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has had a major impact,” said Tyler McCann, managing director of the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute. “I’m not sure if people fully appreciate the long-term challenges that exist and the fact that the situation was already bad before Putin invaded.”The problem has been years in the making and was made worse by the pandemic, which snarled supply chains around the world.
The issue is likely to worsen, with the U.N. projecting the global population to grow to 8.5 billion by 2030 and 9.7 billion by 2050.“Hungry people rebel and go to war. That’s the reality,” he said. “There are few larger causes of armed conflict than hungry people.”Article content Alberta also has a major role to play, and climate change will open new opportunities in agriculture. McCann, however, said there needs to be long-term planning to seize the opportunities.While some commodities, such as wheat, are reaching record prices, so are the costs of inputs such as fuel and fertilizer — and producers are still months away from harvest and knowing what they will be able to take to market.
On Friday, the federal, provincial and territorial ministers of agriculture reached an agreement in principle for the sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a new five-year, $500-million agreement.
