Columnist Kyle Whitmire: 'The governor’s office owes the public an explanation for what’s going on.'
On Monday, Gov. Kay Ivey visited an elementary school science and technology lab, her first public appearance in almost three weeks. There, she watched fourth-graders tinker with tiny bridges and fiddle with robots that zipped back and forth on table tops.Speaking to reporters afterward, Ivey said she is in good health and that all this recent talk about her recent absence is nothing but a bunch of rumors.
Next, my AL.com colleague Mike Cason asked a slightly different version of the yes-or-no question: Had she been hospitalized overnight?“Brian, goodness knows, between all the rumor mills and some of you guys in the media, it seems like a lot of you just want to will these rumors into being,” she said. “That just isn’t going to happen.”
I’d chalk up Ivey’s confusion to a bad Monday if the rest of her answer didn’t seem like a robot that’s begun to malfunction. After Ivey’s public appearances stopped for a week, I asked her office whether there was anything to recent rumors that her health had taken a bad turn. Two weeks ago I tried calling her spokeswoman, her chief of staff and even low-level staffers in her office. I left voicemails. I wrote emails. We kept up these requests for a week. What we got back was silence and invisibility.
