Akron Public Schools’ plan to transport students with Individual Education Plans and those experiencing homelessness relies on contracts with independent drivers and Templeton Transportation LLC.

The board approved the plan 5-0, with two board members not in attendance.

The transportation plan focuses on students who need van transportation, including those who have Individual Education Plans and those experiencing homelessness. The plan calls for using 112 independent drivers under individual contracts and Templeton Transportation LLC. The plan prioritizes using independent contract drivers with Templeton serving as backup, according to a district news release. Previous versions of the plan the board was considering did not prioritize using independent contract drivers.

The plan will cost approximately $4.1 million – a savings of $2.9 million compared to last school year, according to the release. About 143 independent drivers transported students last year. The district is currently working to fill remaining gaps, it said. The plan aims to balance the district’s commitment to ensuring all students have access to education, while also managing resources efficiently, it said in the release. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
