About 70 people attended a celebration of African heritage held prior to the debut of Wakanda Forever at the New Glasgow Cineplex. - ContributedWhen Buhle Dlamini watched the original Black Panther movie when it was released in 2018, he was in South Africa and remembers the theatre being packed and actors present dressed as the characters from the film. It was more than a movie. It was an event.
With the release of the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on Nov. 11, he decided to try to create some of that same excitement by organizing a gathering of Africans and African Nova Scotians and their friends in New Glasgow ahead of the 7 p.m. show at Cineplex in New Glasgow. About 70 people ended up attending the pre-movie event which included a meet and greet followed by a short ceremony. Many wore costumes from the movie and posed for pictures. Traditional African music was played.
Dlamini was also happy to get a chance to watch the movie itself. This sequel broadened the storyline to include people of South and Central American descent.Dlamini believes this movie can have positive impacts on the community through its messaging and even just the opportunity for people to share the experience of watching it together as was done on Nov. 11.
“We can come together and it's not about protesting and it's not about fighting for a cause, it's not about any of those things,” he said. “It's just about celebrating and enjoying and being in the same space together.” It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
