Adidas Chief Executive Bjorn Gulden recently said he didn’t believe that Kanye West “meant what he said,” regarding the megastar’s antisemitic remarks that ended the partnership between the sneaker maker and the rapper last year.

Gulden, when asked about the partnership’s demise in a podcast interview that appeared on YouTube last week, said the matter happened before his time at the company. Gulden, who became Adidas’ chief executive in January, then said that West was “one of the most creative people in the world.” The CEO, in the interview, said that West’s remarks weren’t “good.” He then said that the ending of the relationship, and the withdrawal of those products, were “very unfortunate because I don’t think he meant what he said and I don’t think he’s a bad person. It just came across that way.”

Adidas did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company told CNN and CNBC that its stance had “not changed” on the matter, adding that “ending the partnership was appropriate.” Adidas ADDYY, -0.28% said it would stop making West’s Yeezy-brand products after the rapper’s remarks. That left the company with $1.3 billion worth of leftover sneakers and other gear.
