Advocates urge the Canadian government to quickly implement the remaining provisions of Bill C-21, a gun control legislation aimed at reducing gender-based violence, following the tragic death of a woman and her ex-partner's family members.
Advocates for gender equality are urging the current Liberal government to swiftly implement the remaining provisions of Bill C-21 , a gun control bill passed in December 2023. They warn that any further delay risks putting more women's lives at stake. Brian Sweeney, whose daughter Angie was fatally shot by her ex-boyfriend, which resulted in a tragic chain of events including the deaths of the ex-boyfriend's three children and his suicide, has been vocal about the urgent need for action.
Sweeney, alongside other advocates, believes that the bill's provisions, such as the ban on individuals under protection orders from owning or possessing guns and the revocation of licences for those convicted of domestic violence within 24 hours of reasonable suspicion, are crucial. He has also helped found Angie's Angels, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for the implementation of Bill C-21. Nathalie Provost, a representative from the PolySeSouvient gun control advocacy organization, echoes these sentiments, expressing frustration with the federal government's lack of urgency in implementing these potentially life-saving measures
