SYDNEY, N.S. — The Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s acting fire chief has apologized for his actions during a previous fire and emergency services committee meeting.
Deputy Chief Administrative Officer John MacKinnon, speaking on behalf of CAO Marie Walsh, told the committee that “it is recognized that at the last fire and emergency services committee meeting, it was inappropriate for chief Seth to walk out of the meeting, and for his staff to have left. “We were directed by the former chief/director to leave meeting,” March said. “I left that meeting. And I’d like to say that if in doing so that I disrespected these chambers or anybody within, I apologize. That was not my intent.”MacDonald first requested the issue paper on volunteer firefighter recruitment and retention during a November 2021 fire and emergency services committee meeting. Fire staff did write up a report for January 2022 but it wasn’t submitted until this past March.
And finally, the paper asked for a recommendation that the CBRM “provide the necessary authority for fire service administration to ensure that all volunteer fire departments in the development and implementation of a regionalized volunteer firefighter recruitment process.”MacDonald at the time mentioned the issue paper request he put forth — and, from his standpoint, the less-than-satisfactory response to that request.
“Nobody left that meeting any ill feelings, bad will or anything like that because I know that got that it was a very tense meeting ,” March told the Cape Breton Post in a late June interview.
