, in the wake of the mass casualty event in April 2020, organizers arranged ‘get ‘r done days’ where people would volunteer on a weekend day to clean up brush and branches in preparation for what was to come.
A highlight of the day was a surprise appearance by multiple award-winning Canadian country music singer-songwriter Johnny Reid, who performed his song People Like You. Reid released the song in the aftermath of the tragedy, with the proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross’ Canadian country music star Johnny Reid surprised those in attendance for the Portapique Community Centre grand opening celebration, where he played his song People Like You. He was joined by Portapique resident Allison Merzbach for the performance. Richard MacKenzie
When asked if the project had achieved its goal of bringing the community together and contributing to the healing process, MacKinnon said she believed it had. “For what we do after that one dark night is what will bring honour to the ones who are no longer with us,” she said, as part of her speech, recognizing the Portapique residents who were part of the 22 lives and an unborn baby who were senselessly taken over the two days in 2020.
