“I liked lifting weights and my mom said there was a powerlifting meet coming up in the fall, and thought I should go and try it out,” recalled MacDonald. “So, I went down to the Island Powerlifting Club that was down at the Civic Centre in Charlottetown. “ really made me break out of my shell, gave me an identity, and I was always known as one of the strong guys. It gave me a nice, straight path in a sport to keep focused and stay out of trouble.”

Sproul, who competed in gymnastics for 17 years and played soccer, admitted she was not strong at all when she started powerlifting. “My young fella grew up in the garage hearing deadlifts smash, loud music blaring and having little naps between it all,” said MacDonald. “He grew up in the atmosphere of it all. It was probably inevitable that he was going to be doing powerlifting.”

“It’s pretty fun and I get to train with my friends,” said AJ, who competed in “my first big championship” at the Eastern Canadians. “Typically, for women, bench is our weakest lift, so we work a little harder at that one,” said Sproul, who added AJ trains twice a week.
