Trump credits Pakistan’s role in ceasefire, urges peace through trade
RIYADH United States President Donald Trump praised Pakistan’s cooperation in brokering a ceasefire with India, calling the agreement a major breakthrough in defusing escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Speaking at the Saudi-US Investment Forum, Trump revealed that his administration had played a key role in facilitating the truce, using economic diplomacy to push both sides towards peace. “Let’s not trade nuclear missiles. Let’s trade the things you make so beautifully,” he said, referring to his discussions with Pakistani and Indian leaders. Trump emphasised the potential devastation that was averted, stating, “Millions of people could have died. It started off small and was getting bigger by the day.” He commended both countries' leadership, describing them as “strong, good, smart leaders,” and expressed hope that the ceasefire would hold. Trump also highlighted Pakistan’s assistance in capturing a global ISIS terrorist, underscoring Islamabad’s role in promoting regional stability. The US State Department echoed Trump’s sentiments, saying Washington now aims to encourage direct communication between Pakistan and India. Islamabad has welcomed dialogue while firmly rejecting Indian allegations, positioning itself as a responsible actor in the region seeking peace and cooperation over conflict.
