SC upholds death sentence for Zahir Jaffer in Noor Mukadam murder case
ISLAMABAD The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday upheld the death sentence of Zahir Jaffer for the 2021 murder of Noor Mukadam, dismissing his appeal. A three-member bench, led by Justice Hashim Kakar, maintained the verdict handed down by the trial and Islamabad High Court , which had previously convicted Jaffer for the brutal killing of Noor, who was tortured and beheaded at Jaffer's residence in Islamabad.
The defence argued that evidence, particularly CCTV footage, should be scrutinised, but the court dismissed these claims. Jaffer’s co-accused, Mohammad Iftikhar and Jan Mohammad, who were sentenced to 10 years for aiding the crime, had their sentences reduced. The Supreme Court also reduced Jaffer's sentence for rape from death to life imprisonment. Noor’s father, Shaukat Mukadam, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, which concludes a nearly three-year-long legal battle. The case, which sparked widespread outrage, has drawn significant attention to issues of violence against women in Pakistan.
