ISLAMABAD - The Judicial Commission of Pakistan is set to hold a meeting today to discuss the appointment of eight new judges to the Supreme Court. According to sources, Chief Justice of Pakistan , Justice Yahya Afridi will preside over the meeting which will be held in the Supreme Court's conference room at 2:00pm.
The Judicial Commission has called for the submission of names of senior judges from Pakistan's five High Courts. Meanwhile, All Pakistan Lawyers Action Committee has announced to stage a protest on the Constitutional Avenue today against the said meeting. On the other hand, four judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan wrote a letter to the Chief Justice a few days ago, requesting him to delay the appointment process. Furthermore, Senator Ali Zafar, member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, has written a letter to Chief Justice Yahya Afridi requesting him to postpone the commission’s meeting. He said the session be deferred until the issue of seniority is settled in the Islamabad High Court. In the letter, he said due to the recent transfer and posting of the judges, the seniority list of the IHC has changed.
