It doesn’t matter that other drivers have won weather-shortened races without unfair criticism. And it doesn’t matter that NASCAR was right to call the 2021 YellaWood 500 at Talladega short of its scheduled 188 laps. The victory was his first in 143 career starts and the first for a Black driver since the late Wendell Scott at Jacksonville in 1963 . A huge segment of NASCAR’s fanbase carped about it, arguing that officials should have waited for clear skies so the race could continue. In truth, it rained deep into the night; the call was perfectly understandable except for those who didn’t want to see another Black winner.
