'They're not all Pintos,' said the vice-president of public affairs at the Canadian Automobile Association.

Some 6.6 million "unsafe vehicles" are likely on the road despite having unresolved safety recalls, the federal government says.

The department has proposed new rules that would require companies that issue a safety recall to quickly post related information on their website in order to boost awareness and fix the defect. "Unfortunately in this country if you want to know for sure whether there's a recall issued on your vehicle, you have to pay attention yourself — especially in the case of a used vehicle, because the only name on record that the government would have or that the automaker would have is likely the initial purchaser," he said in a phone interview.
