To get the lowdown on proper bra washing technique, I spoke with Suzanne Barton, executive vice president design and global merchandising for PVH, one of the largest apparel companies in the U.S., and bra expert Frederika Zappe, fitter with Freya, Elomi, and others, to find out a few common mistakes we’re making with our intimates come wash day.Unlike underwear, you really don’t need to wash your bra every time you wear it. If you’ve been sweating a lot—or, obviously, if it smells—you want to get it clean, but if it’s dry and not particularly dirty, it’s perfectly fine to wear it again . “[When to wash your bra] is really your choice and doesn’t need to be every time you’ve worn it,” Zappe tells SELF.

And of course never use bleach!” Barton also suggests using a delicate lingerie-friendly soap to wash your bras with to lengthen their lifespan, as they need a product that will help protect their delicate fabrics as it cleans.Barton advises washing bras by hand but if you would rather put them in a machine she suggests using a mesh lingerie bag. The bag will protect bras from becoming stretched out, and keep hooks from snagging on any other clothing you’re washing with them.
“It creates a barrier between your bras and other items in the load, and prevents the straps from getting tangled and stretched out,” Zappe explains. “Even if you’re using a lingerie bag, we still suggest washing on low heat, gentle cycle.”Although it may be tempting to toss yourin the washing machine next to a pair of your favorite leggings, it’s important to remember that they need a little extra love, too.
