Three historic homes in downtown’s Sam Houston Park are now part of the national Slave...

as part of its project, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced on the last day of Black History Month.

“People need to know about the slave route that took place, and it is a cultural tourism site, and we need to highlight and uplift that,” Turner said. “It’s not about sports and musical venues. It’s about the history that has helped make the city, this country what it is today and should never, never be forgotten,” he told ABC13.

The project was launched in 1994 to preserve sites related to the slave trade and highlight and celebrate the contributions of African Americans. The Fourth Ward Cottage, originally located at 809 Robin in Fourth Ward, was built circa 1850. It first housed a German immigrant family but by the turn of the century, it was in the heart a Freedmen’s Town, a thriving African American hub for Black business, education and culture.

The Rev. Jack Yates, a former slave, built a home in Fourth Ward for his wife and 10 children. The Yates House was originally located at 1318 Andrews in Freedmen’s Town and was donated by the Yates family to the Heritage Societey. His great-granddaughter, Jacqueline Bostic, serves on the board of the Emancipation Park Conservancy. Yates led freedmen to pool their money to buy 10 acres of land to become Emancipation Park in 1872.

The Kellum-Nobel House is the oldest surviving building constructed in Houston, built in 1847. Its original brick walls are made with mud from Nathaniel Kellum’s brickyard on the banks of nearby Buffalo Bayou. While the enslaved African Americans who worked in the house were once ignored in the exhibits, their history has become part of the story of the Kellum-Noble House.
