200 sign letter calling for strategy to repair long\u002Dterm pandemic damage to children\u0027s mental health
sent to the premier by First Call: B.C. Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition, advocates, health care professionals and researchers say a strategy is needed to address the needs of the one in five children in B.C. that live in poverty, children with complex needs, and children already marginalized by racism and the province’s legacy of colonialism.
“There is overwhelming scientific data of the importance of the early days of a child’s development on their current well-being and their lifelong health and well-being. There is a huge cost that our children will be paying if we ignore this,” said Kobor. Evidence shows that these changes can affect a person for a lifetime — even if circumstances change later in life.
“What is unique about the current situation is that it is so powerful and so unanticipated,” said Kobor.“A human being has roughly 24,000 genes, like light bulbs within us — a gene can be totally on or totally off, or on a dimmer. Epigenetics is a dimmer that sets the intensity of the light bulb.
