Police launched an investigation after a 79-year-old woman was found on a bench outside the Aspira Traditions retirement home without vital signs on April 1, 2023. The woman was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said in a news release. The investigation found the woman exited the building the evening before around 7:30 p.m. via a stairwell. Over the course of the night, the woman tried to get back inside the building but was unable to because the doors were locked, police said.On Tuesday, Durham police said a 34-year-old woman and a 29-year-old woman have been charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide necessities of life.
