104-ton CNR 7260 spent many years putting trains together in Bridgewater rail yard
John MacDonald, who led an acquisitions team for the Middleton Railway Museum, stands on CNR 7260, a 1906 steam locomotive the museum acquired for the Museum of Industry in Stellarton. The 104-ton locomotive arrived Feb. 16 and was scheduled to be lifted onto the track early on Friday, Feb. 17.MIDDLETON, N.S.
"This is an historic day," said Middleton Railway Museum Society chairperson Dianne Hankinson LeGard."Every piece of railway memorabilia helps tell the amazing story of the rich railway history in the Annapolis Valley and indeed, throughout southwest Nova Scotia. CNR 7260 is a big and majestic piece of that history."
CNR 1274 is the Middleton Railway Museum's other steam locomotive, donated by the Municipality of the County of Annapolis and lifted onto the tracks in Middleton in December of 2020 by A.W. Leil Cranes. The same company will lift CNR 7260 onto tracks just south of where 1274 now sits.Linley said 7260 is the oldest locomotive built by the Canadian Locomotive Company in Kingston, Ont., that still exists.
John MacDonald, who headed up a five-person acquisitions team for the Middleton Railway Museum, was approached by the Museum of Industry in early 2021 about receiving artifacts from the provincial museum, including CNR 7260. The team visited the museum in June of that year and again late in 2022."We are very fortunate to have a 1906 0-6-0 steam locomotive to add to our collection," he said."I cannot wait to see her remarried to her tender after decades of separation.
"Soon, with the donation of a turntable from the Nova Scotia Museum of Industry, the Middleton Railway Museum will have a new attraction," Linley said."In the future, we plan to install the turntable west of the station so that our exhibits may be turned from time to time.""Before the line’s abandonment in 1982, it would have turned locomotives, including those that hauled trains to Middleton," Linley said.
