OWEN SOUND – It has been 140 years since the SS Asia steamship sank in a storm in Georgian Bay, resulting in the worst ship disaster in Lake Huron history.

And while the wreckage of the ship — travelling from Owen Sound to French River when it sank on Sept. 14, 1882 — has never been found, retired commercial fisherman and Asia researcher Glen Parr is hopeful that day will soon come, thanks in part to his own research.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Georgian Bay historian Glen Parr, whose in-depth research has changed the outlook of where the SS Asia sank, takes a turn at the helm of Jim and Pat Stayer’s boat while heading out to search for the shipwreck. In 1882 it would be transferred to a new route on Georgian Bay, where after only three months tragedy would strike.

Christie Ann Morrison was one of the two teenage survivors of the Asia disaster. In Toronto after the sinking, she posed for a series of nautical photos. Parr believes that a lighthouse the survivors saw from their lifeboat was actually the Red Rock light, which is about 50 kilometres south of the Byng Inlet light, around where the other searches had taken place.

Parr’s research also surmised the First Nations rescuers would not have enough time to row from Byng Inlet to Parry Sound in just one day. And he pointed out that the small rocky islands off the southwest corner of Franklin Island are named the Savage Rocks, a name they held prior to the survey of eastern Georgian Bay, which came soon after the sinking of the Asia.
