Spider-Man has seen some dramatic changes to his lore over the years, and these ten events would absolutely shock any of the hero’s fans in the ‘90s.
Like most other Marvel characters, Spider-Man has changed a lot in his superhero career. Though Peter Parker is still the same wise-cracking, wall-crawling do-gooder he's been since he was first bitten by a radioactive spider, his world has also grown considerably.
9 J. Jonah Jameson Loves Spider-Man J. Jonah Jameson, Jr. has made Peter Parker’s life hell, both as a photographer and a superhero. But the two’s contentious relationship got a lot more complex when Peter’s Aunt May married JJ’s father, John Jonah Jameson, Sr. But despite the long, checkered history between the two, they manage to find common ground when Peter reveals his secret identity to his employer in Spectacular Spider-Man #6.
6 Spider-Man Discovers a Forgotten Sister Peter Parker has always been the presumed only child of Richard and Mary Parker. However, the graphic novel Amazing: Spider-Man: Family Business revealed that Spider-Man has a sister named Teresa. She doesn’t have spider-based powers, but she is an extremely skilled spy with a lot of connections in S.H.I.E.L.D. And while there was a question of whether the two were actually related, Teresa discovered she is a blood relative to Peter Parker.
3 Venom Becomes a God Spider-Man isn’t the only one who’s changed since the ‘90s. Peter’s monstrous evil twin Venom might have gotten his start as a twisted, alien copy of the hero, but he’s come a long way since. The symbiote’s cosmology was expanded quite a bit under Donny Cates’ time with the character, revealing that Venom is tied to a powerful god of darkness known as Knull. But Venom overthrew Knull in King in Black, giving Eddie Brock a godlike upgrade in power.
