-- France’s state auditor Cour des Comptes said that the divergence of the budget deficit compared to other European Union countries is unacceptable and the next government needs a coherent and credible plan to repair public finances .
BlackRock Says Gunman From Trump Rally Appeared in Firm’s AdThe budget deficit expanded to 5.5% of economic output in 2023, far wider than the 4.9% target because of lower than expected revenues, discretionary tax cuts and an absence of structural savings measures, the head of the auditor, Pierre Moscovici said in Les Echos.“This situation contrasts with our European partners, who have begun to decrease their deficits and debts,” Moscovici said. “It is neither satisfactory or acceptable.” The comments are another red flag for the euro area’s second-largest economy, where the budget is already shrouded in uncertainty after a turbulent election delivered a hung parliament. At one point during the campaign, the selloff in French bonds drove the premium on the country’s borrowing costs compared with Germany to the highest since the region’s sovereign debt crisis over a decade ago. While market tensions have since eased as no party won the absolute majority required to have a free rein over the budget, a left-wing coalition that pledges a vast increase in public spending is in the ascendancy after taking the largest number of seats. Still, the New Popular Front would need to water down its proposals to form any kind of government capable of commanding a majority. Current Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire has opened the door to building consensus for specific projects, but limited the scope for compromise by warning that the left’s manifesto is a danger for France and President Emmanuel Macron’s plans for fiscal consolidation must not be weakened.Citing a report that will be published later Monday, Les Echos said the Cour des Comptes’ analysis shows that any miss on spending, growth or tax revenue in the coming years would derail the government’s long term spending plan. “The next trajectory must be coherent and credible — which means being based on realistic savings plans and documented revenues,” Moscovici said. The former first lady spoke out after former President Donald Trump was wounded in a shooting at a campaign event the previous evening.Looking for a pen pal?
