Pierre Poilievre, the leader of Canada's Conservative Party, has been blaming Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for a range of issues in Canada and the world, arguing that Trudeau's weakness has led to a decline in national standing and mirrored Trump-like behaviors.
This week, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre found a new thing to blame Justin Trudeau for: He argued energetically that Donald Trump does Donald Trump things because the Prime Minister is weak and has dragged the whole country into the same position. As Canadians have been feeling squeezed by everyday life, Pierre Poilievre has enthusiastically blamed Justin Trudeau for every single thing that’s gone wrong in Canada and the world at large.
It all started on Monday night when Mr. Trump vowed on social media that, immediately after his Jan. 20 inauguration, he would impose 25-per-centon all products from Canada and Mexico “until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” “The United States is the greatest economic and military superpower in the history of the world and they are our neighbour,” Mr. Poilievre said. “The U.S. is responsible for $1.2-trillion of our trade. We trade almost twice as much with the Americans as we trade with the rest of the world combined.”
Mr. Poilievre advanced other suggestions that were more relevant to the dispute at hand, if vague - strengthening the border and beefing up the Canadian military – but mostly, he plunked a new title on the same tunes he’s been banging out for months. Later, in the House of Commons, he underlined the wounded gazelle quality he said had caused Mr. Trump to pounce on Canada.
Mr. Poilievre is tailor-made in his political talents and tendencies for the role of opposition leader, calling out the government’s malfeasances and missteps. But the day is approaching fast when he will have to stop scrawling in red ink all over someone else’s work and instead sort out his own solutions to the never-ending problems on the big desk. He seems to be resisting this dress-for-the-job-you-want statesmanlike shift with everything he’s got.
