Authorities are investigating a fish die-off in Topham Pond, Toronto, where numerous dead fish were found. The cause is currently unknown but could be due to natural occurrences like temperature fluctuations or algae blooms.

Several dead fish were discovered floating along the shores of Topham Pond in Toronto 's Eglinton Flats park over the weekend. Video shared on social media showed the pond's shoreline teeming with flies and littered with the remains of several small fish and a few larger fish. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and Ontario Ministry of Environment , Conservation and Parks have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fish die-off .

While the investigation is ongoing, authorities suggest that the incident might be a natural occurrence. \The ministry stated, 'TRCA is working with the city to address this situation and have shared that recent temperature fluctuations in the past few weeks may be a natural cause of the dead fish in the pond.' They added that there's no evidence of any chemical spills in the vicinity that could have caused the fish deaths. \Jacek Pawlikowski, a microbiologist who was near Topham Pond on Tuesday, believes the fish died due to algae blooms. He explained, 'Every year, we have some lack of oxygen and it's coming from the decaying algae… fish are dying. The blooming algae and then lack of oxygen at the last stage when they are decaying underwater is normal around the world.' As a result of the significant fish die-off, a family fishing event scheduled for Saturday was cancelled. The TRCA assured the public that it is working closely with the City of Toronto to address the situation, including any necessary cleanup or remediation efforts.
