The Zonta Club of Sault Ste. Marie Area is participating in an international campaign to raise awareness about gender-based violence, as designated by the United Nations. The campaign highlights the 62 women and children in Ontario who fell victim to gender-based violence in a single year, represented by 62 pairs of orange shoes displayed at the Northern Community Centre Arena.
The Zonta Club of Sault Ste. Marie Area is joining an international campaign aiming to inspire action to end violence against women and girls.
Thirty-five percent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence. “This powerful and emotional display of 62 pairs of shoes representing the 62 women and children in Ontario who died as a result of gender-based violence in one year,” said Jane Vienneau, president of the local club.
Vienneau says six of those pairs of shoes represent three women and three children who were murdered in our community.“Women in Crisis reports that 160 individuals accessed emergency shelter services this year,” she stated.
