The Royal Canadian Legion has a long history of supporting veterans. The need became apparent when the soldiers started returning from the First World War.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 55 serves as a community centre for the village of Port Morien. CONTRIBUTEDWatch onThe need became apparent when the soldiers started returning from the First World War. In 1925, the Legion was founded as the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League. In 1960, Queen Elizabeth 2 gave her consent to use the prefix “Royal” and the organization then became known as the Royal Canadian Legion.

Just about everything in Port Morien takes place at this facility. There’s the popular Country Market, the annual Fall Fair, weddings, birthday celebrations, funeral receptions, book club meetings, Port Morien Development meetings, public information sessions, walking club, chair yoga, bingo, Santa Claus and Easter Bunny visits as well as the Legion meetings. On Aug. 12, the second annual Dock Your Dory took place on the Legion grounds.

People driving by might have noticed a new ramp on the front of the building. The old wooden ramp on the side of the building was becoming a safety hazard due to rotting boards. It was a necessary purchase but an expensive one. The young volunteer crew installed the ramp in three days so there was no expense for labour. Many of the regular readers of the Cape Breton Post might remember one of my columns a few months ago about our upcoming Poppy Project.

The Legion has used up a lot of the available cash reserve on alternate solutions that didn’t do the job. We were hopeful but it just wasn’t meant to be!We are pretty good at fundraising in the village but we need a quick cash flow to get this sewage issue moving ... pardon the pun.We are looking for 1,500 generous people to each donate $20 to the cause. $20 seems like a doable amount for an average person. We are not looking for the “sun and the moon and the stars “ just a small amount of cash.
