A 14-year-old male was killed and a man was critically injured Thursday night in a shooting that occurred outside a recreation center in Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police chief The shooting occurred shortly before 8 p.m. in the first block of Tuckerman Street NE, just off North Capitol Street, steps from the Lamond Recreation Center.
At a news conference, Smith said a basketball game was being played inside the center at the time of the shooting, but it wasn’t immediately known if either victim or the person who fired the gun had been at the event.Smith said several people were outside when the gunfire erupted in the Lamond Riggs neighborhood. No arrest has been made and the chief said detectives have not yet determined a possible motive.
Police have not publicly identified the teenager who died. Smith said the 14-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 18-year-old who was shot was taken to a hospital in critical condition.The police chief called the shooting an “unfortunate tragedy." Smith said “this is another example of the senseless gun violence in our city. This incident happened at a recreation center where our young people should be able to come and recreate and have a good time and enjoy themselves.
