President Joe Biden made his statement about Vladimir Putin off the cuff. If he said, “should not remain in power” instead of “cannot remain in power,” the statement would not have sounded as if the United States was going to physically remove Putin.Re: “Ginni Thomas, faith’s outsize role in politics,” Michael Gerson, Saturday:
I was very moved by Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson’s thoughtful piece on the danger of religious certainty to civil society. It reminded me of an argument I read recently that today’s conservative Christians prioritize orthodoxy over orthopraxy. The writer meant people tend to carry lists of beliefs to which one must ascribe; otherwise, one runs the risk of being cast out, judged harshly, and even hated. On the other hand, orthopraxy, or living your faith through your behavior, would mean that one would do as Jesus would do, which would definitely not be the actions I listed above.
I implore my fellow Christians: Please do not cherry-pick Bible verses to justify hatefulness; instead, ask yourself, WWJD?I agree with letter writer Rachel V. Diaz-Kennon that Chris Rock should apologize to Jada Pinkett Smith for the rude comments he made. It doesn’t matter whether he knew about her medical condition. Is there no dignity anymore?
