Six ideas that'll make new vehicles today more DIY-friendly — remember when you didn't have to disassemble half your car to change a light bulb? via drivingdotca
Of all the expletives that colour the air near a DIYer working on their ride in the garage, the overwhelming majority are a result of vehicle engineers and designers who, according to the amateur wrench-turners, seem to build their product in the most user-unfriendly manner. If any auto executives are reading, here are a few things that would go a long way to attract and keep loyal customers who love a little tinkering.
Some useful stickers, like the good ol’ daysThe underside of our vehicle hoods are littered with stickers of little use to the average do-it-yourselfer. How about some useful ones, like a belt-routing diagram — these used to be a thing on older vehicles — or one indicating the spark plug type? Yes, most owners’ manuals contain this data, but spend a few extra pennies and put them where we can see them. Of course, in the meantime, a smartphone pic can help with drive belt routing.
How about painting jack points on the undercarriage? You might think any self-respecting DIY jockey would know where to place a jack on their vehicle, but a few bright markings would go a long way to making this an easier task. At a dealership where I once hung my day-job hat, we had a detail specialist who marked all the fluid check and fill points under the hood with florescent paint. Our customers found this very helpful.
