Paul Dano’s Riddler: Year One hits fever pitch in the penultimate issue - out now - as Edward Nashton succumbs to paranoia. Art from the issue reveals the villain's journals, initially seen in The Batman and used as the basis for the series.

It’s not often that an actor gets to write the backstory for his own character, no less the villainous, obsessive Riddler, but in The Riddler: Year One acclaimed method thespian Paul Dano is doing a bang-up job in illustrating the tortured pathos of his character from last year’s psychological thriller-tinted reboot The Batman.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Though it may have come as a quite welcome surprise to his fans and readership, Dano has shown his passion for his craft in this series. Gamely and humbly stepping into the role of writer, alongside artist Stevan Subic, Dano has delivered nothing short of an exquisitely frightful, but hauntingly realistic exploration of The Batman’s Riddler that might as well be required reading for fans of the film at this point.

Dano's Prequel is Required Reading for a Superhero Blockbuster Aside from fleshing out the villain’s backstory, what this series ultimately accomplishes is the much more powerful effect of truly evoking the rationality of an otherwise impenetrable villain, so much so that it ends up adding enough to the character’s performance in retrospect that it might as well be considered necessary to fully understanding the film.
