As an Ottawa Redblack, Cleyon Laing has seen some good, some bad and some really ugly. He's hoping to help his team beat Montreal Monday.

There was the Grey Cup in 2016, but there’s also been the disappointment of three lopsided losing seasons – 2021, 2022 and 2023. It’s not like the Redblacks were dominant in 2016, their Grey Cup season. But with an 8-9-1 regular-season record, they hit the ground running in the playoffs, beating Calgary 39-33 in overtime to win the big trophy, the rings and the pile of money that goes to each of the champions. So, here we are in 2023.

Within Laing, who has also spent six seasons with the Toronto Argos, there’s still a hunger to get better, a desire to help push his team to victory, something that hasn’t happened often enough the past three years. It’s frustrating, but he pushes ahead, trying to do his part. This season, Laing, who is always a big presence in the middle of Ottawa’s defensive line, has 16 tackles and six sacks. His calling card is a high motor.“Our defence is all predicated off the front,” said Redblacks coach Bob Dyce. “And when you look at who really gets the front going, it’s Cleyon. He’s playing at an elite level He’s one of the biggest leaders on this team, everybody feeds off him.
