Dawe received a thyroid cancer diagnosis in 2021. It’s become his mission to show people that cancer doesn’t have to keep you down.“Everybody's cancer journey is different, but this is what works for me, and I decided to take on another full-distance Ironman because I'm not going to let this make me run and hide,” said Dawe.
Cancer soon spread to his neck and lymph nodes. It felt like someone pulled the rug out from under him. Life was on its head. For the first 11 days after his diagnosis, Dawe felt like he had lost all control of his life. “I'm really asking a lot of myself, but I'm so excited to take all these emotions, and stand up for my family and for my friends, and especially for the young adult cancer community, while raising awareness, attention, funds and just conversations about how this stuff can happen.”Even when he was going through his surgery, he dragged a stationary bike into his hospital room. This was how he coped.
To date, he has raised more than $11,000 for YACC. That money will go toward various programs, including a virtual chat program that allows young adults fighting cancer to chat with others going through the same thing.
