Sleepovers were the cornerstone of childhood for many. But with awareness being brought to childhood sexual abuse, is that still the case for today’s kids?
“When I had my own children, I was very aware of the dangers lurking and, as a rule, did not allow my children to have sleepovers during the early formational years. I did not want to be negligent and was routinely hyper vigilant.” “While my child came back from that party ‘safe’ in body, this encounter was an obscene image that left this image is seared in my child’s memory for life.”
“We taught our children, from the get-go, proper terminology for their body parts. We talked about what was private and what was public. We honoured who our children didn’t feel comfortable hugging or being around and never forced them. We taught them that if they were ever in danger, they never had to be polite,” said Ross.
“With our 13-year-old son being an only child, it was something that I was looking forward to for him. It would give him the chance to see his house as a fun place for him where he can have people over who are important to him. It was also a way for him to go to another house and have some independence from his parents,” said the father from Halifax.
